We provisioned the boat on reaching Norwalk and the
following morning motored south west down the Long Island Sound in nil wind on misty
beautiful smooth waters. Timing was a small problem. At the speed we were
motoring, which was roughly 8 knots, standard for a catamaran, we would enter
the East River, Manhattan on the outgoing tide and as I discovered, this was
challenging.
It was nil wind all the way, and sure enough as we entered
the northern extremities of the East River she started to come at us. By the
time we got to the appropriately named we were down to 1 knot over the ground and
struggling to keep the bow facing the right direction. Will was happy to let me
do the driving which I appreciated as it was about as challenging as it gets in
terms of managing the catamaran in strong current. There was the odd hair
raising moment like when a small tug pushing a huge garbage barge came
downstream at us and could do nothing but blast their horns five times at us.
Five blasts equals “get” “out” “of” “my” “way”… I thought it would have been
more appropriate had there been 6 blasts…
By the time we reached the Statue of Liberty it was sunset,
New York glistening in the last rays and the Lady Liberty presenting a once in
a lifetime shot taken on an IPhone 4…. Pity.
The Lady Liberty truly aflame. |
